Gel polish without compromise: how to make it last and keep your nails healthy

Why gel polish sometimes peels after just a few days, and what you can do to keep your manicure flawless until your next appointment.

Gel polish is one of the most popular services in our salon, and for good reason: nails look neat for weeks, without chips and without polishing every day. Still, how long a manicure lasts does not depend only on the polish, but also on how the nail is prepared and how we treat our hands at home.

Why does gel polish peel?

The most common cause is poor adhesion to the nail plate. Oil and moisture on the surface of the nail, leftover cuticle or polish applied right up to the skin create spots where the polish starts to lift. After that, water, a cleaning product or a knock is enough to lift the edge.

Preparation is half the job

That is why in the salon we spend the most time on what you do not see in the end. The cuticle is carefully pushed back and removed, the nail plate is lightly buffed and degreased, and the polish is applied in thin layers, each cured separately. Thinner layers are more flexible and durable than one thick layer.

Six habits that make your manicure last longer

  • Wear gloves when cleaning. Detergents and disinfectants dry out both the nails and the skin around them.
  • Use cuticle oil every day. A drop of oil in the evening keeps cuticles soft and prevents cracking along the edge of the polish.
  • Nails are not tools. Opening cans, scratching off labels and typing with your nail tips damage the edge the fastest.
  • Avoid long soaks. Long baths and hot water soften the nail plate, so the polish lifts more easily.
  • Book regular infills. The ideal interval between appointments is two to three weeks, before the nail grows out too much.
  • Never peel it off. When you force the polish off, the top layer of the nail comes off with it.

Correct removal protects the nail

During gel polish removal the polish is softened and gently removed, without scraping the healthy nail plate. This keeps the nail strong and ready for a new manicure or a short break.

When do nails need extra care?

If your nails are thin, bendy or break easily, we recommend the IBX treatment, which strengthens the nail plate from within. It can be done on its own or combined with polish as gel polish with IBX.
